After hearing emotion-packed presentations from attorneys on both sides of the issue, a majority of Carlsbad’s Planning Commission agreed Wednesday to allow a controversial seawall to remain in place at the southern end of the Terramar beachfront community.
A grandfather clause allows most existing homes to be built back to their current specs in the event of damage.
It’s been a bad month for the residents of the apartment complex on a high sandy bluff in Pacifica. They had to evacuate their homes as winter storm waves continued to erode the bluff fronting their two-story apartment building. Chunks of bluff continued to fail until their narrow concrete patios were left dangling over the edge, 80 feet above the ocean.
The plan that will go before county supervisors next week has been amended since the Planning Commission approved it in December and now allows homeowners who lose their home to fire or natural disaster to rebuild to their original specs, regardless of the extent of their damage.
This Tuesday’s (2/2/10) Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors’ meeting will present another opportunity to express public support for a countywide “grandfather” ordinance.
