A small revolution in local land-use policy is set to occur on a strip of beachfront properties near Twin Lakes State Beach. What makes the project unusual is that in widening the street, the county is taking back land that has long appeared to belong to the million-dollar homes there gazing out upon the sea.
Popular Sunny Cove Beach has been both an enjoyable beach and a source of community interest for many years. Most people are surprised to find out that it is privately owned property. Recently the owners contacted the County in order to donate this small-scale beach surrounded by natural bluffs, which is enjoyed by residents and
visitors alike.
But one thing many of the regulars there don’t know is that the beach is privately owned, and public use of the property has been more about the goodwill of the owner than a guarantee.
A small, gated beach that relatively few know about and even fewer have access to may soon open its gate to daily visitors.
At the prodding of the California Coastal Commission, the neighborhood group that manages the aptly-named Privates beach likely will begin offering a daily gate pass to visitors for $5.
CARMEL — State officials blasted Santa Cruz’s parking rules along West Cliff Drive Thursday, saying they get in the way of moonlight walks and late-night surf sessions.
A 9-foot wide gate or turnstile on the Boardwalk’s eastern end will be open during the park’s hours of operation under a plan approved Friday by the Coastal Commission.
